Many people know that yoga has numerous health benefits. However, most people do not know that there are simple and easy yoga poses that can actually help improve digestion.
The overall point of yoga is to find a conscious balance in our lives and make everything we do sacred. Outside of the actual practice of yoga poses, this means to try and have meals in comfortable environments and to use food for its intended purpose: as fuel for the fire of our physical and spiritual transformation.

Toxins include any substance the body cannot use and must eliminate. Some are created by the body as a part of normal metabolism, but most toxins come from our environment. Pesticides and herbicides; food additives, colorings and preservatives; air and water pollutants; and products we use such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco are all toxins. They can disrupt proper digestion and elimination, create hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances (which will affect your mood, energy, focus, concentration and pain levels), decrease energy production and disrupt your overall body chemistry.

Research has found that fat is not just a passive by-product of overeating; they have shown that body fat actually produces many inflammatory chemicals. This means that fat is not just a reservoir of excess calories waiting to someday be used as fuel when calorie intake runs low. It means that fat itself acts like an ‘organ of inflammation’, producing many of the chemicals responsible for creating a low-grade system-wide inflammatory state in the body. These chemicals include:
- IL-6 (Interleukin-6)
- IL-8 (Interleukin-8)
- IL-18 (Interleukin-18)
- TNF-α (Tumor necrosis factoralpha)
- CRP (C-reactive protein)
- Insulin
- Blood glucose
- Leptin
These markers of elevated inflammation are also one of the main reasons why obesity is associated with so many health conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, diabetes, arthritis and autoimmunity in addition to insulin resistance and obesity itself.

Most everyone is familiar with the term ‘menopause’, which refers to the end of a woman’s reproductive years. What some people don’t know is that men also go through a similar transition, known as ‘andropause’ or ‘male menopause’, during their later years. In both cases, the transition is often associated with hormone imbalances and tends to coincide with other age‐related declines. Fortunately, rebalancing hormones naturally generally provides symptom relief and also tends to delay other age‐related illnesses and conditions.

“Eat less, exercise more” we are told. This has been the accepted weight loss formula for as long as anyone can remember. And it doesn’t work. Only 2‐3% of dieters maintain weight loss for over three years. This system ‐ of having people track calories, keep track of points and/or eat pre‐packaged, pre‐made or processed meals ‐ does nothing to help people lose weight and only compounds the confusion.

The most important groups of hormones for women are estrogens (especially ß‐estradiol) and progesterone. In a healthy female body they balance each other so phases of the menstrual cycle occur regularly. When one is going down, the other is going up. Their synchronized cycle repeats about every month (25 to 35 days). When the balance between estrogen and progesterone is lost, your body may act in unpredictable ways.

What is stress?
Stress is caused when we react to situations in our internal and external environment. It can cause exhilaration, excitement, distress, or fatigue, and can manifest itself physically, mentally and emotionally. It is not the situations that are stressful; it is our reaction to the situation that causes us stress. Stress is a natural part of life, as it provides a stimulus for action.

by Dr. Oler, ND | Sep 15, 2016 | Neurotransmitter, Neurotransmitter Function, Neurotransmitter Imbalances
Neurotransmitter imbalances can be caused by many different factors, including:
- Food intolerances
- Stress
- Toxic burden
- Sleep disturbances
- Alcohol
- Digestive imbalances
- Dietary deficiencies
- Genetics
- Drug use
- Medication use, including antidepressants, anti‐anxiety, sleep and migraine medications
Therefore, one of the keys to determining how to correct the underlying imbalances is to determine each individual’s unique cause(s) of imbalance and addressing them
Neurotransmitters are made in the body from specific amino acids and cofactors, like B‐vitamins, selenium, and other vitamins and minerals. Given the right proportions of each of these nutrients at the right time, the body will make the neurotransmitters it needs.
We often use a very powerful test, called a Comprehensive Metabolic Profile, that identifies each individuals specific needs for B‐vitamins, nutrients involved in cellular energy production, neurotransmitter metabolism, nutrients involved in detoxification, markers for gastrointestinal flora (dysbiosis) imbalance, essential fatty acids balance, free radical and antioxidant status and sensitivities to the thirty (30) most common food intolerances. It is a wonderful test that can be performed in the comfort of your own home and sent in. Once we get the results, we review them with you over the phone and give you recommendations to address any imbalances present.
If you are not interested in doing testing to determine your exact imbalances, all is not lost. We have used several formulas with great success in helping people rebalancing their neurotransmitter levels naturally. For more information on testing and non‐testing options, please contact us by phone (608.274.7044) or email ([email protected]).

With their distinct fresh green flavor and creamy texture, avocados play well with lots of the other foods on your plate. What’s truly remarkable though is that the research indicates that avocados can help with the absorption of carotinoids, the compounds found in orange and red fruits and veggies that can help protect against cancer. So while they may seem a bit indulgent, avocados could turn out to be lifesavers.
