Perimenopause is the time period preceding the cessation of normal menstrual periods; this typically occurs sometime between 35 and 50 years of age. It is often thought that hormone levels decline uniformly during this time and that the symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause are due solely to a decrease in sex hormones.
