Hormones are chemicals your body produces to regulate various functions – they are messengers. They send important messages and signals to various organs and tissues. When they work harmoniously, your body behaves in a predictable way. But if there is too much or too little of any one hormone, then imbalance occurs and you can begin to feel that something is wrong. Once more, since all your hormones are in balance with one another, if one is out of balance, all your hormones will have to shift to compensate. This is why you can have so many different symptoms associated with hormone imbalance.

For example, if your levels of estrogen and progesterone are imbalanced during the menstrual process, you may exhibit several of the common symptoms of PMS, such as bloating, mood swings and cramping. However, because the imbalance between estrogen and progesterone affects your other hormones you can experience other symptoms as well, including sweet or sugar cravings (due to an imbalance in insulin), low energy (due to an imbalance in adrenal hormones), and changes in libido (due to imbalance with testosterone). Soon you begin to understand that hormone imbalance at any stage has many effects on the body because the body is always striving to be in balance.
