New research has provided further evidence that processed meats can increase the risk of breast cancer. This study, published in the European Journal of Cancer found that women who consumed more than 9 grams of processed meats per day – which is equivalent to around two sausages per week – increased their breast cancer risk by 21%.
Processed meats are those food-stuffs that have been modified to enhance their flavor or lengthen their shelf life and include things like sausages, bacon, hot dogs, salami and most deli/lunch meats.
Other research has shown that the consumption of processed meats increases the risk of colorectal cancer as well as breast cancer.
The takeaway – stay away from processed meats; even in moderation, they are not good for you.
