Need an excuse to start a garden? A study conducted by the University of Utah found that people who garden in community gardens weigh less than their non-gardening neighbors.

Here is a summary of the data:

  • The BMI of female community gardeners was an average of 1.84 points lower than non-gardening neighbors (a 11 pound difference for a 5′ 5” woman).
  • The BMI of male community gardeners was an average of 2.36 points lower than non-gardening neighbors (a 16 pound difference for a 5′ 10” man).
  • The likelihood of being overweight or obese was 46% lower for female gardeners.
  • The likelihood of being overweight or obese was 62% lower for male gardeners.
  • The average BMI for female gardeners was 1.88 points lower when compared to their sisters.
  • The average BMI for male gardeners was 1.33 points lower when compared to their brothers.
