Are you at risk for osteoporosis?
Take this quiz and find out – check all that apply to you:
- White or Asian ethnicity
- Thin or small bone frame (to find out, wrap your right hand around your left wrist just above the “wrist bone”; if your middle finger and thumb overlap, you have a small frame)
- Family history of bone loss with age
- Postmenopausal or surgical hysterectomy
- High protein diet
- Low stomach acid or frequent indigestion
- Lack of weight-bearing exercise
- Cigarette smoking
- Drink more than 1 glass of alcohol per day
- Less than optimal intakes of calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients needed for new bone formation
- Long-term use of anticonvulsants or blood-thinning medications
- Regular use of aluminum containing antacids
- Regular use of diuretics such as Lasix, Bumex, Edecrin and Demadex
- Hyperparathyroidism, Type 1 Diabetes, thyrotoxicosis or Cushing’s syndrome
- Long-term use of prednisone or cortisone therapy
If you checked three or more of the above statements, you are at risk for osteoporosis and should consider taking measures to prevent osteoporosis. Only you medical doctor can make a diagnosis, but you don’t have to wait until you have osteoporosis to do something about it.
Will post Interpreting Your Results for effective strategies for osteoporosis prevention on Thursday. Come back and check it out.
I started out 2 years ago with pain in my shoulders, lots of bloodwork told me I had polymyalgia and prescribed prednisone. Gelt great on 20 mg. Tapered off and pain in wrists and hands. Long story short, I.am 64, Rheumatologist did not know really what was wrong, but had 1 high liver reading she had blood tests taken and everything good but my ANA reading was a 3:15. I have pain in my joints, wrists swelling, toe pain and tingling, knees at times. I am taking 600 mg circumin with 5% black pepper. Osteo flex, 2 scoops of collegen in 1 cup of coffee daily. I am not into taking harsh drugs so my Rheumatologist told me not to come back. I also have my husband in a wheelchair he is a t4 para and i am his sole caretaker. We do well together and he has gotten himself off all pain meds, i am also giving him circumin. I am not able to go to Madison for treatments but if you can help I would love to hear from you. I really do not want to go on drugs with harsh side effects. I also have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, other than these issues I am healthy and I work hard.
Thank you
