Melatonin has well known anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects; it has also been shown to be protective against the acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by viral and other pathogens. There is significant data showing that melatonin limits virus-related diseases and would also likely be beneficial in COVID-19 patients.

As COVID-19 infections continue to spread across the globe, so does the search for methods to improve immune function and decrease the effects of infection. From the available data, it appears that excessive inflammation, oxidation (free-radical damage), and an exaggerated immune response very likely contribute to COVID-19 progression and symptoms. This can lead to a cytokine storm and subsequent progression to acute lung injury (ALI) and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which can result in severe symptoms and possibly death.

Melatonin has been shown to be a safe and extremely effective way to combat the negative affects associated with COVID-19 infection. Here is a great article outlining these effects: COVID-19: Melatonin as a potential adjuvant treatment.

Melatonin is widely available and is quite inexpensive. We carry products that contain 1 mg, 3 mg and 20 mg per serving. From existing research, daily dosing of 3 – 20 mg is well tolerated and safe.
